What Causes Venous Ulcers?
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
When blood pools in your veins from chronic venous insufficiency, it increases the pressure on the veins. As the pressure rises, it causes the veins to rupture, and the leaking fluid wears down the surrounding skin.
Damaged Veins
Damage from surgery, inflammation, infection, or injury can also add to the pressure on the veins or impact blood circulation, leading to an ulcer.
Additional Risk Factors
Other factors increase the likelihood of developing venous ulcers, including:
- Varicose veins
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Blockage of lymph vessels
- Aging
- Being overweight
- Smoking
- Pregnancy
- Genetics/Family history
Venous Ulcer FAQs
Because damaged veins have increased pressure, they can eventually rupture and leak fluid. The fluid breaks down the surrounding tissue and the nearby skin, manifesting as a visible venous ulcer.
If your sore is near your ankle and accompanied by pain, itching, and swelling, it may be a venous ulcer. It may also discharge a foul liquid and have hardened skin.
