How Wound Care Works
Venous ulcers require attentive care in order to heal with minimal scarring.
At your appointment at Florida Lakes Vein Center, we first thoroughly clean and treat the wound for you, but we also walk you through cleaning, changing the dressings, and protecting the healthy skin around the wound.
Because ulcers may take a long time to heal, recovery involves diligent at-home care from you to maintain healing. You’ll wear compression stockings every day to normalize the pressure in your veins and alleviate the wound. Over time, we’ll help you resolve the underlying cause of your venous ulcer.
Wound Care FAQs
When the valves are damaged or weak from vein problems such as chronic venous insufficiency, they allow blood to flow down into the vein, where it accumulates and increases the pressure on the vein. The rising pressure eventually ruptures the vessels and leaks fluid into the surrounding tissue. These fluids gradually wear down your skin, producing a hard-to-heal ulcer.
Treating chronic wounds requires you to take an active role in your care. When you visit us for wound care, we show you how to properly clean and dress the wound on your own, and we may advise you to wear compression stockings to promote healthy blood flow. We’ll make sure you receive the exceptional care and education you deserve to recover from your chronic wound.
